January 11, 2010

So I’ve taken the last few days to do some thinking.  And I’ve come to a decision.  You may want to sit down (um...for those of you who prefer to surf the web while standing).  After some deep thinking, I’ve decided that the next few comics will be the conclusion of Retail Death.

There are a few reasons for this.  And I’ll start with the ones that will make you feel better (and hopefully minimize the sad and angry e-mails I get after this).

This comic is about retail, and having worked retail for several years, I have had and still have plenty to say on the topic.  But I’ve got a lot of other stuff to say, too.  Having to churn out three retail-themed comics a week has begun to feel quite stifling.  It’s a restrictve practice, and while it has been successful in having the targeted appeal I meant it to, I am itching to say some of the other things that are on my mind.  So fear not; I am not leaving webcomics behind.  I am beginning a new comic, with no specific theme -- some days, I might even do retail comics.  As I said, I still have stuff to say about it!  But it won’t be every day -- just a sometimes thing.  While the other days of the week will be filled with humor, or serious strips with (I hope) a good message.

Retail Death was an experiment for me.  I have always loved webcomics, and have loved drawing and writing, and decided to give it a try.  Turns out I love it.  I learned a lot about web publishing, art, advertising, and even selling merchandise.  I know how to run a website now, albeit in a very guerilla, amature way.  Now I know, and I am ready for a new project.

And the fact is . . . I’m just not angry anymore.  I started this particular comic because I hated retail, hated my job, hated my company, and needed a place to vent.  And now I’m out, and I love my new job, and I’m kinda over it.  I still hate that store, and I still hate retail, but the fury is gone.  So, though I still love drawing Retail Death, in a way it’s like salting a wound.  That’s not good!

The last few comics will be a 3-to-4 part story (three if I can fit it all in, 4 if I can’t).  The end should be somewhat conclusive, and hopefully give some kind of sense of finality.

And the site/Facebook Fanpage/Twitter page will stay open until I the new project is up and running.  So stay tuned, as I will use all three to keep you posted.  I hope you’ll check out the new comic.  I will pouring my blood, sweat, and tears into it, so hopefully you will enjoy it as much, if not more, than Retail Death.

Updates Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
